Uggghh the comments on that make my head hurt. "You're wrong because there was one anime that had lots of female characters once!!!!" "You look so pretty" "You're wearing too much makeup, dear" Shutup shutup shutup.
Anyway, this is really fascinating and one of those things I recognized subconsciously but couldn't really put my finger on. Seems like the "male narrative" is hyper-macho, where the "gender-neutral narrative" is... slightly less macho. I've been thinking lately about how women, when experiencing a story, have to enter into a male avatar 90% of the time--and 90% of the time do it without even noticing. (I would have hoped the movie Avatar would have explored what it means to take on a role but no. :c )
Fanon Laurie and Sally are SO GREAT. I love the idea that so many people have tweaked and added onto them all the way up until the limits of canon until they make actual sense. The Wanda phenomenon is great too, idk.
Most of my ideas for graphic novels/webcomics/sequential art/blah involve main female characters, but what I've been struggling with is--how do I keep people from seeing that female main and automatically thinking "oh this is lady comic for ladies"?
